Receptor binding at MC1R on melanocytes raises intracellular cyclic AMP and increases expression of tyrosinase and related enzymes. The downstream result is greater synthesis of eumelanin, the dark pigment, without ultraviolet exposure acting as the trigger. The compound is not selective, however, and also engages MC3R, MC4R and MC5R, which are expressed in the central nervous system and elsewhere. That lack of selectivity is the explanation usually offered for effects reported outside pigmentation, including appetite suppression and nausea. Selectivity remains a central theme in comparative studies of related peptides.
Human data remain limited and mostly short-term. Reports describe small trials and observational accounts rather than large controlled studies, so questions about dose-response relationships and long-term effects on melanocytes stay open. Whether repeated exposure alters naevus behaviour is not settled in the published record. Researchers also note that self-administered use outside clinical settings makes actual exposure difficult to quantify. Statements about efficacy and safety should therefore be read as preliminary rather than established.
Melanotan-2 is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide designed as an analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a naturally occurring peptide involved in pigmentation signalling. Its sequence incorporates modified residues that increase potency and extend biological activity relative to the native hormone. The compound binds receptors of the melanocortin family and is examined mainly in laboratory research. It does not occur naturally and exists only as a manufactured chemical entity produced by solid-phase synthesis.
The peptide was developed during the 1980s by researchers investigating melanocortin signalling and skin pigmentation pathways. Early work focused on analogues of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone that would resist enzymatic breakdown more effectively than the parent molecule. Melanotan-2 emerged from that programme as a shortened, cyclised variant. Reports describing its synthesis and receptor activity later appeared in the scientific literature. Commercial availability grew through unregulated channels rather than through pharmaceutical approval.

Melanotan-2 is a synthetic peptide designed as an analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a signaling molecule produced in the pituitary and skin. Its structure is a linear chain of seven amino acids that folds into a ring through an internal lactam bridge joining two side chains. The compound is sometimes written as MT-II or MEL-2 in informal and commercial contexts. It belongs to the melanocortin peptide family, a group of short signaling molecules that share a conserved core sequence recognized by melanocortin receptors.
Two structural changes distinguish the synthetic peptide from the natural hormone. A norleucine residue replaces methionine at one position, and a D-configured phenylalanine replaces the natural L-form at another. Both substitutions slow enzymatic breakdown, which extends the molecule's persistence relative to the parent hormone. The lactam bridge further constrains the backbone into a stable conformation. These features are standard design strategies in peptide chemistry and are not unique to this compound; they appear across many research peptides built for improved stability.
The compound was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s by academic researchers investigating melanocortin signaling and pigmentation. Early work explored whether synthetic analogs could reproduce effects of the natural hormone under controlled conditions. The molecule never advanced through the full regulatory pathway required for approval as a medicine. From the mid-2000s onward it appeared in unregulated consumer markets, often distributed through informal channels. That gap between research origins and commercial availability shapes how the compound is discussed today.
Reformist Mikhail Gorbachev, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, also wished to reduce defence expenditures, including the enormous open-ended commitment of military aid to FAPLA, and was more open to a political settlement accordingly.

The "Four Policemen" was a postwar council with the Big Four that U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed as a guarantor of world peace. Their members were called the Four Powers during World War II and were the four major Allies of World War II: the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, the United States, and the Republic of China. Roosevelt repeatedly used the term "Four Policemen" starting in 1942. The Four Policemen would be responsible for keeping order within their spheres of influence: Britain in its empire and Western Europe, the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe and the central Eurasian landmass, China in East Asia and the Western Pacific; and the United States in the Western Hemisphere. As a preventive measure against new wars, countries other than the Four Policemen were to be disarmed. Only the Four Policemen would be allowed to possess any weapons more powerful than a rifle. Initially, Roosevelt envisioned the new postwar international organization that would be formed several years after the war. Later, he came to view creating the United Nations as the most important goal for the entire war effort. His vision for the organization consisted of three branches: an executive branch with the Big Four, an enforcement branch composed of the same four great powers acting as the Four Policemen or Four Sheriffs, and an international assembly representing other nations.
=== Niche uses === Copper(II) sulfate has attracted many niche applications over the centuries. In industry copper sulfate has multiple applications. In printing it is an additive to book-binding pastes and glues to protect paper from insect bites; in building it is used as an additive to concrete to improve water resistance and prevent plant and mushroom growth. Copper sulfate can be used as a coloring ingredient in artworks, especially glasses and potteries. Copper sulfate is also rarely used in firework manufacture as a blue coloring agent, but it is not safe to mix copper(II) sulfate with metal powders, or it or any copper(II) compound with chlorates; the sulfate and other copper(II) compounds are not allowed in chlorate containing mixtures in the US.
== Legal status == As of March 2022, the European Commission has taken new measures to control the psychoactive substance of 3-CMC. This decision is based on a risk assessment conducted by the EU Drugs Agency (EMCDDA) in November 2021. Since 3-CMC was prohibited in China (October 2015), it was found that most of the production was manufactured in India and little of the substance supply originates from inside Europe. Several European countries were ahead of the European Commission report by (generically) controlling the substance. Nowadays, in almost all countries 3-CMC is prohibited.

Lexanopadol (INNTooltip International Nonproprietary Name, USANTooltip United States Adopted Name), also known by its developmental code name GRT-6006, is an opioid receptor modulator which was under development for the treatment of pain. It is taken orally. The drug acts as a dual agonist of the μ-opioid receptor and nociceptin receptor. It is thought that the combination of these activities may confer enhanced analgesic efficacy. Lexanopadol was under development by Grünenthal. It reached phase 1 or 2 clinical trials prior to the discontinuation of its development, with no further development reported by 2016. The drug was a follow-on compound to cebranopadol (GRT-6005).
Indocyanine green is an FDA-approved photothermal agent that is primarily used in imaging techniques, but also displays anticancer and antimicrobial activity through photothermal therapy (PTT) treatments. Photothermal agents are active against diseased cells by accumulating in or around target cells, then converting light energy directly to heat, killing the target through heat-related damage. PTT has a low level of selectivity beyond the accumulation stage, in which it tends to preferentially accumulate within diseased and bacterial cells. This increases broadband antibiotic activity and decreases the likelihood of resistance development, but also raises the impact on human cells. Human cells experience irreversible damage in the range of 46-60 °C, which is below temperatures reached by some photothermal agents during photothermal therapy. Human cell viability may be maintained through low temperature PTT (≤ 45 °C), which is typically only possible in combination with an additional antibiotic or photodynamic activity.
The Soviets planned to use the GIUK gap to intercept any NATO ships, especially aircraft carriers, heading towards the Soviet Union. Ships and submarines as well as Tupolev Tu-142 maritime-surveillance aircraft aimed to track any threatening ships. The advent of longer-ranged Soviet submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) allowed the Soviet Navy to deploy their ballistic missile submarine (SSBNs) within protected bastions in the Barents Sea and reduced their need to transit the GIUK gap. The much reduced, post-Cold War Russian Navy has even less need to transit the GIUK gap. Crossing the GIUK gap was a major strategic move for Ocean Venture in 1992, in which 84 NATO ships, including 4 US aircraft carriers, departed from their usual August exercise pattern, deployed a decoy south toward the mid-Atlantic, and then entered waters in a move that had historically been associated with a risk of destabilizing détente.
=== Pharmacodynamics === The mechanism of action of traneurocin is either unknown or undisclosed. However, it has been described as acting as a positive allosteric modulator of the AMPA receptor and has been found to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. It has also been found to act as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABAA receptor. The drug is described as having neuroprotective, neurogenesis-stimulating, and pro-cognitive or nootropic effects. It has also been reported to have antihypoxic and anxiolytic properties.

It is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide and a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist. Structurally it is modelled on alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone, a peptide that occurs naturally in the body.
Activation of MC1R increases pigment synthesis independently of ultraviolet exposure, which is the mechanism usually cited for darkening without sun exposure. Ultraviolet light still influences skin response through separate biological pathways.
Because the peptide binds several melanocortin receptor subtypes, its effects are not confined to pigmentation. This complicates interpretation of both intended and unintended outcomes reported in studies.
It is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide and an analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The molecule is produced by chemical synthesis rather than extracted from a biological source.
